McKissack House Tour
Join us on Sunday, February 23rd, immediately following worship (around 11:00 AM), for a special tour of the historic McKissack House, led by Gloria McKissack. Ms. McKissack, a civil rights activist involved in the Nashville sit-ins, served as a professor of history at Tennessee State University for many years. Her late husband, Joel McKissack, was a fourth-generation architect from a distinguished family of Black architects who established the first Black architectural firm in the country. In 1912, Joel’s grandfather built the home across the street from Edgehill UMC —a grand residence of its time, complete with two bathrooms and indoor plumbing.
Today, the McKissack House serves as a small museum, preserving the legacy of this prominent Black family. We invite you to join us for this tour and hear Professor McKissack’s stories about her family and her own life experiences. All are welcome, but the tour is limited to 20 people. Please RSVP to attend.
